Carrick Hill: Wire-Free Automower Technology at One of Adelaide’s Iconic Estates
Maintaining large heritage properties comes with unique challenges. The lawns need to look immaculate year-round, noise must be kept to a minimum, and heavy mowing equipment can often damage delicate turf areas, especially during wetter months.
Recently, we had the opportunity to install multiple Husqvarna Automower units at Carrick Hill House Gardens in Adelaide using the latest wire-free EPOS technology.
This project became one of the most exciting robotic mowing installations we’ve completed to date.

The Challenge
Carrick Hill features a combination of large open lawn areas, narrow garden sections, sloped terrain, heritage landscaping, and high public visibility.
Traditional ride-on mowing in these environments can create several issues:
- Turf compaction
- Visible wheel tracks during winter
- Noise disruption for visitors
- Labour-intensive maintenance
The goal was to create a quieter, lower-impact, highly consistent mowing solution capable of maintaining the lawns daily without intrusive equipment.
The Robotic Mower Fleet Used
To cover the different lawn types and terrain around the property, several Husqvarna Automower models were deployed.
Husqvarna Automower 580 EPOS
Used for the largest open lawn sections requiring maximum productivity and commercial-grade performance.
Husqvarna Automower 560 EPOS
Installed across large general turf areas where efficient daily maintenance and pattern mowing were important.
Husqvarna Automower 520 EPOS
Used for medium-sized zones and areas requiring flexible navigation around pathways and landscape features.
Husqvarna Automower 305E
Used in tighter and narrower garden sections where larger commercial units had limited manoeuvrability.
The combination of different mower sizes allowed every section of the property to be maintained efficiently while matching the specific requirements of each zone.
Why EPOS Wire-Free Technology Was Important
One of the major advantages of this installation was the use of Husqvarna EPOS wire-free technology.
Instead of installing traditional boundary wires throughout the grounds, the system uses satellite-based positioning with virtual boundaries.
This provided several key benefits:
- No physical boundary wire installation across heritage lawns
- Easier future layout changes
- Flexible mowing zones
- Adjustable stay-out areas during events or maintenance
- Cleaner installation with less disruption to the property
The ability to remotely modify mowing zones and schedules also gives the grounds team much greater flexibility throughout the year.
The Results
The robotic mowing system now maintains more than 20,000m² of lawn area with quiet daily mowing, consistent presentation, reduced turf stress, and minimal human intervention.
One of the biggest improvements has been the reduction of visible wheel tracks and soil compaction previously caused by heavy ride-on equipment during winter.
Because the grass is maintained continuously rather than cut aggressively once per week, the overall lawn quality and presentation have also noticeably improved.

Why More Commercial Properties Are Moving to Robotic Mowing
Projects like Carrick Hill demonstrate why robotic mowing is becoming increasingly popular for:
- Wineries
- Hotels
- Schools
- Sporting grounds
- Lifestyle properties
- Public gardens
- Heritage estates
The combination of lower noise, daily maintenance, reduced labour requirements, better lawn consistency, sustainability benefits, and wire-free flexibility makes robotic mowing an attractive long-term solution for many commercial properties.
